I’m an Indianapolis-based freelance writer and editor focused on education, health and fitness, and nonprofits. (For all the details, head to my LinkedIn profile now.)
But let me tell you a story about how this all started.
Boy, was I cool.
I’d waited tables for months after getting my journalism degree (graduating during a recession: do not recommend). Then I snagged a job as a reporter with a daily newspaper.
What would I be covering? Who cared? I had a job. And at the ripe, old age of 22 I would be sitting in a newsroom alongside seasoned old hands who’d been writing and reporting longer than I’d been alive.
As it turns out, I was to cover the education beat, reporting on everything from school board meetings to the projects and programs of local college campuses. What, exactly, did I know about writing about education? Well, it must have been something impressive — because they gave the job to me.
Sure. Also, there was this: The person they’d actually wanted to hire had backed out.
That nugget was among the first of many things I’d learn as a newbie reporter writing about education.
And 30 years later, I’m still doing it: discovering ways I’m not as cool as I think (for more on this, please contact my kids) — and writing about education.
Education, Health & Nonprofits
Of course, beyond that passion for education sparked by accident all those years ago, I’ve discovered other interests along the way: I’ve been a fitness devotee since around the time I got my rookie reporter comeuppance. And much of my work has been in the nonprofit sector, from college media relations to local and national charitable organizations.
So, today education, nonprofits, and health & fitness are the focuses of my freelance writing and editing.
